What Will I Learn: Veterinary Technology

Going to school for Veterinary Technology is about more than just playing with cute and cuddly animals, like this one.聽 It鈥檚 about making them feel better! 黑料不打烊 Veterinary Technology[1] students show all the great things they鈥檙e learning in the program.

In the classroom we mainly focus on anatomy and physiology.聽 We also focus on various species, because we don鈥檛 work with just dogs and cats.聽 We also focus on reptiles, birds, horses, cows.聽 You name it we basically learn it,鈥 said San Jose Veterinary Technology Program Director Candace Morton. Just a few days ago we did a rat and mice lab.聽 So we got to see those.聽 And then we got to see some of the student鈥檚 guinea pigs,鈥 student Kassidy said. You learn biology.聽 You learn chemistry.聽 Plus, behavior, because if you don鈥檛 know what the animal is feeling or thinking, you don鈥檛 know how to react and you don鈥檛 know how to give them the best medical care,鈥 added student Katharine. So you really have to know the animal鈥檚 behavior to understand whether or not you should go towards the animal or whether or not you should ask for help,鈥 Kassidy added. You start out with the basics and then you get into lab and you get the hands-on, which helps you out in clinic and the real field, 鈥 student Danielle said. Students also talked about what skills they learn in the lab. So blood work, you learn how to do blood smears.聽聽 You do white blood cell counts, manually, by a machine,鈥 Kelly said. As they work into the later terms they will actually start assisting in surgery, taking radiographs, and even learning how to bandage and splint animals,鈥 added Candace. It鈥檚 so hands on here, that this is exactly what we are doing out in the real world,鈥 Danielle said. 鈥淲e are assisting on surgery. So we are medicating the patients, and then we can go ahead and get catheters in their peripheral vain,鈥 Katharine said.
