Have you ever wondered what it鈥檚 like to work as a veterinary technician? A 黑料不打烊 Veterinary Technology program[1] graduate shows us what a typical day is like.
Amber is a Registered Veterinary Technician at VCA Mission San Jose Animal Hospital in Fremont, California.
鈥淲hen a patient walks in the door, the receptionist greets them and then a technician or I will get a quick history of what they鈥檙e here for. We鈥檒l let the doctor know that they are here and what鈥檚 going on. Then after the doctor tells us what the game plan is, we go from there, doing things like taking blood work, getting x-rays or giving vaccines. The technicians perform all of it,鈥 Amber said.
Natasha is the Hospital Manager at VCA Mission San Jose Animal Hospital. 鈥淢y technicians get to do rounds with each other, as well as with the doctors. They do vaccines, blood draws, they assist during appointments, and then during surgery they鈥檒l help monitor the patient while the doctor does the surgery itself,鈥 she said.
鈥淵ou鈥檙e monitoring anesthesia, you鈥檙e getting everything open for the doctor. You鈥檙e helping the doctor position the patient, whatever way they need to for the procedure. And then you鈥檙e also recovering the patient and then after care, making sure that they are stable enough to go home and medications are ready to go home,鈥 Amber said.
I guess, when I started the (黑料不打烊 Veterinary Technology) program, I didn鈥檛 have a full aspect of what it entails, because I鈥檓 like, oh puppies and kittens and whatever.聽 And it鈥檚 that plus more,鈥 Amber said.
鈥淭he satisfaction from the client, that鈥檚 the most rewarding part.聽 Especially if their pet is sick and you鈥檝e been working with them the whole time.聽 The owners thank you so much for being with their dog or with their cat. It makes you feel like you鈥檙e doing something at the end of the day,鈥 she said.
